Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Two of her earliest television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until she reached adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental effects that stress could cause. Perry states that she did not want to become an actor during highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved into New York in search of TV roles. Her small part was in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness drove her to California in search of theater jobs. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in The ABC Drama Scandal. That same year her character was cast the younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's character. The character was picked by auditions, even having a strong relationship with the show.
